WBL Students, improving access to women entrepreneurs is part of our mission. We believe students might come from farther away (Baltimore, Ashburn, etc.) if we held fewer sessions on the weekend versus more sessions on the weeknight. Please vote on your personal class preferences below.

The WBL workshop series produces the following results in our young female students age 18 to 30:

82% Improvement entrepreneurial skills from beginning of end to class.

1. 146% improvement in entrepreneurial confidence from beginning to end of class.
2. 126% improvement in ability to create opportunities for themselves from beginning to end of class.

62% of the girls would be willing to take this back to their country and teach it (after training).

WBL Class of 2010-Summer Session

The cost is $350 for 10 classes.

Course components:

25% Leadership/Group work. Students work as a team and submit their assignments weekly on the blog. Topics include basics of professional communication, idea generation, market research, and SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat) analysis.

• Added to toolkit: Special features of Microsoft word, blogging (wordpress.com), PollDaddy.com, professional communication habits and expectations.

25% Mentorship Skills. Each student must interview a mentor, and post the results on the blog.

• Added to toolkit: Planning and communicating with busy people! Learning from established leaders.

25% Business Idea and Presentation. Students make a two minute presentation at the end of the semester on their business idea.

• Added to toolkit: Presentation skills, business analysis skills, Powerpoint and SlideShare.net.

25% Attendance and Participation. Students are required to attend class, and participate regularly, as part of their commitment to their own future, and to create a feeling of trust and support in the classroom environment.

• Added to toolkit: Professionalism and consistency.

Extra: Writing “Hot Mommas Project” case. A case is a teachable story. Hot Mommas is the world’s largest collection of women’s case studies. Students are asked to write their lessons, reflect on their path, and act as a mentors to others in doing so.

• Added to toolkit: Personal reflection, critical thinking, giving back (through sharing and mentorship).

Award-winning Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Class

As seen in the Washington Post Magazine article “CEO of ME Inc,” this course is for individuals who want to:

Enhance leadership skills

Plan a new venture or business

Think entrepreneurially

Develop skills for career success

Who takes the class? Individuals with business and non business majors, undergraduate and graduate students. This summer, many international students who are part of a State Department cultural exchange program are taking the class.

Where: Washington DC-GW Foggy Bottom Campus. Students will be emailed location.

When: Fall Summer Session (Part I) 10/6 to 12/15 (No class 11/24) 8 to 10 pm (Weds nights)

Who: Kathy Korman Frey – faculty member at George Washington University (see next page)

* In addition to homework, there is approximately one hour required each week for group meetings. There will be additional hours of outside-of-class meetings with students as part of the course to practice business communication, team work, and technology skills

Hours: 36 hours per semester. A letter will be provided to all participants confirming their participation.

Price: $362 for Part I. Refunds permitted (less processing fee) two weeks prior to the first class (10/6 is first class).

About: The class will be taught by Kathy Korman Frey, GW faculty member and a co-developer of the WEL class, and founder of the Hot Mommas Project research initiative. The GW WEL class is the recipient of a National Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education award which led to a ranking of the GWSB entrepreneurship program in Fortune Small Business. The Hot Mommas Project is the world’s largest womens case study library, making the stories of our mothers, sisters and friends teachable to serve as virtual role models and mentors for the next generation, and each other.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can I take only part I? How much is it?

A: Yes. Part I is $362 during early bird registration.

If the class does not fill up, will I get my money back?

A: Yes, up to two weeks prior to the start of class.

What are the dates?

A: 10/6 through 12/15 (Wednesday nights) 8 pm to 10 pm. No class 11/24

Where is it?

A: Foggy Bottom GW Campus.

How many credit hours is it? Will I get a letter?

A: The class is 36 hours, and – yes – you will get a letter acknowledging your completion of the course. Grades are offered upon request, but are not a standard provision of this class. Anyone who completes this class is considered a graduate.

What does “other activities outside of class” mean?

A: Each week you will be responsible for having a team meeting in person, or via conference call. This will teach you about group dynamics, organization, and technology – all totally essential for business.

What type of business are we studying?

A: This class is focused on skills for entrepreneurship, and general women’s leadership so you can have skills that will help you be successful in any job, or starting your own business.

Thank you for considering the mentorship of a young woman as part of our summer Women’s Business Leadership Class. My name is Kathy Korman Frey, I am a  faculty member at the George Washington University School of Business and have organized this special private seminar series for State Department cultural exchange students. All proceeds from this class benefit my women’s leadership research, The Hot Mommas Project.

Mentees are directed to identify a mentor, conduct an interview (not via email), write-up the interview (for their personal records), and then share their top three learnings with the class via our blog – which you are reading now.  Students are told to use the mentor first name only in their summary write-up. In addition, students are encouraged to take the lead in scheduling and following up about the interview thus learning key skills in professionalism and “managing up.”  Finally, students are encouraged to share interview questions in advance and – while we hope they do – you may need to help navigate them through this process.
